Of all the great golf movies over the years, which ones are truly the best?
Now, “best” is certainly a subjective label, and our picks certainly fall under that umbrella. But in choosing our all-time favorites, we didn’t want to confine our list to one genre. This one spans a few of them, but together they represent what we think is a solid, representative sample of golf movies where we think you should grab the popcorn and remote, kick back and enjoy a few hours of golf-themed movie entertainment.
With that said, here’s our top 5 – in no particular order:
Tin Cup (1996) – Who doesn’t love a great underdog story? In this case, it’s Kevin Costner portraying Roy McAvoy, overcoming a slew of bad choices in relationships, booze and competitive shot-making to get to the cusp of a U.S. Open championship. An all-time classic, right up there with …
Caddyshack (1980) – If you’ve mimicked at least one line from this comedy in a bar room chat with your buddies, you’ve recited at least a dozen of them. Caddyshack brings out the comedic best in Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight. Don’t just stand there, Spalding, get us some glue.
While you’re at it, be sure to check out …
Dead Solid Perfect (1988) – You’ll have to dig a bit to find this one starring Randy Quaid, but it’s worth it when you do. It’s an HBO Films adaptation of Dan Jenkins’ famous novel, and follows the life of a golfer on the PGA Tour – in this case, Quaid’s Kenny Lee, a talented but underachieving pro searching for that breakthrough moment in his career.
The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005) – Shia LaBeouf as a competitive golfer? Not as silly as it might seem on the surface. And in this drama, he does well in portraying legendary amateur Francis Ouimet, a working-class youth who takes on British pro legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an unlikely quest for the U.S. Open title.
Happy Gilmore (1996) – OK, enough drama, back to the comedies. And you can file this one into the “guilty pleasure” category. Just be careful where you mimic Adam Sandler’s trademark swing from this film.
That’s our list; what’s yours?
