Local course designers bring special quality to Myrtle Beach
With more than 100 courses, golf on the Grand Strand provides the unique opportunity to experience a wide variety of different layouts. Many of the designs featured in our popular Myrtle Beach’s Best package were created by course designers whose Grand Strand-area work often comes first to mind. They are accomplished architects who know the area well and whose designs play to its natural beauty.
A prolific architect in the Myrtle Beach area, Clyde Johnston has designed five courses here, including Glen Dornoch and Shaftesbury Glen. From the time it opened in 1996, Glen Dornoch has been a must-play for visitors. With 35-foot elevation changes sweeping down to the Intracoastal Waterway, the course utilizes the natural terrain as well as any in the Southeast. Shaftesbury Glen’s famous stone-clad entrance and English-styled clubhouse welcome players to this championship course. It features wide-open fairways, but with tough, often elevated greens.
Often referred to as “The Pebble Beach of the East,” Ken Tomlinson’s design for Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach is a masterpiece. Contouring golf with miles of natural marshland and sand dunes, the course is classic, yet contemporary, offering rewards for players willing to take risks. The natural beauty of the land is sure to become the star of your round, as the Atlantic Ocean comes into view on the back nine.
Tom Jackson is another legendary course designer in Myrtle Beach who, along with touring professional and architect Raymond Floyd, built Arrowhead Country Club, a marvelous 27-hole facility winding along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Known for the quality of its greens no matter the time of year, Arrowhead’s three nines (Lakes, Waterway, and Cypress) each possess their own unique quality. And with the look and feel of a private country club, Arrowhead always delivers a grade-A experience.
