The name Pete Dye can send shivers down the spine of golfers. His resume includes some of the game’s best and most challenging tracks, ranging from Whistling Straits to TPC Sawgrass.

Pete’s only solo design in Myrtle Beach, the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort, further enhanced his reputation as one of golf’s greatest architects, but the reasons for the layout’s popularity arent just about its difficulty.

Sure, the Dye Course is tough, but don’t let the name intimidate you.

As is the case with many Pete Dye tracks, the perception of difficulty is sometimes greater than the reality.  From the tee box, Dye’s use of waste bunkers and mounding can make landing areas appear small, but don’t be deceived as there is ample room to drive the ball.

The course offers the chance the for a quick start as the par 4 second hole and par 5 fifth will give you every chance to make par or maybe even birdie.

Don’t let all this talk of playability fool you; the course isn’t unfairly difficult, but it will test your game.

The meat of the challenge begins on the sixth hole, a beautiful par 3 that plays to a narrow green with water running all along the right side. It’s the first true, anxiety-inducing shot of the day, but it wont the be the last.

Golfers need to build a cushion on the front nine because the closing stretch is a dozy. The 11th hole is the course’s hardest, according to the scorecard, but, for my money, the par 4 14th, which, plays 429 yards from the black tees is the most vexing.

Pete Dye has designed some of the most challenging public golf courses in the world

A waste bunker runs from tee to green on No. 14 and if your ball finds it, the hole effectively becomes a par 5. Survive that and the par 3 15th, a 204-yard monster awaits. Those are the courses toughest consecutive holes, but Dye follows them with a straight-away par 5 that serves as a breather.

Pete Dye has a reputation as the game’s most fearsome architect, and his namesake design in Myrtle Beach is no pushover, but the course, one of the Grand Strand’s finest, isn’t overwhelming.

This is a trophy track and one certainly worth building your Myrtle Beach golf trip itinerary around.
